Crete

Welcome to Crete, a stunning gem in the heart of the Mediterranean! It is the perfect island for a late summer in October. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of history, Crete promises an experience that lingers long after the journey ends. I’d like to share with you my favorite spots and provide you with a mood board about this beautiful Greek island. I traveled with my husband and son. We did not stay at so called “family hotels”. Our experience was that the Greek LOVE children anyways and our kid doesn’t need any special animation program so far. He loves to interact with people play at the beach or pool with us. But who knows maybe we’ll book a family hotel one day.

Hotels
We decided to go for four accommodations in order too see as much as possible from the island but have a lot of relaxation too.

We spent our first three nights at one of the apartments at Sun & Stone Villas, and we absolutely loved it! Our son particularly enjoyed the Jacuzzi and couldn't get enough of it. The host was incredibly kind, even surprising our son with a little welcome gift. He also arranged an early check-in for us at 8 AM, which was a huge help since our flight arrived quite early. We had a wonderful stay at Sun & Stone Villas and highly recommend it!

Our favorite place is for sure The Island Concept Crete. It was also the most expensive stay but it was worth it. Nestled on the stunning shores of Crete, The Island Concept offers a unique blend of luxury, relaxation, and breathtaking natural beauty. If you’re seeking a getaway that combines modern elegance with the rich culture of Greece, this hidden gem should be at the top of your travel list. From the moment you arrive at The Island Concept, you’re greeted with warm hospitality that makes you feel right at home. The attentive staff goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is unforgettable, providing personalized service that caters to your every need. Whether it’s arranging a private dinner or suggesting local attractions, they’re dedicated to creating a memorable experience.

Culinary Delights: One of the highlights of staying at The Island Concept is the dining experience. The on-site restaurant serves a delightful array of local and international dishes, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Indulge in a traditional Cretan feast or savor innovative culinary creations while enjoying stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The island's rich culinary heritage shines through every dish, making each meal a celebration of flavor.

We spent two additional nights at the Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Resort. To be honest, I’m not typically a fan of large resorts, but for two relaxing days by the pool and beach, it was perfect. My personal highlight was the pool and beach area, which was blissfully uncrowded since it was off-season. It provided the ideal environment to unwind and slow down before heading back home.

Exploring
Besides enjoying the warm weather at the beach and by the pool we did some sightseeing:

Beach Elafonissi

Heraklion
Unfortunately, we only spent a few late hours in Heraklion. I wish we had planed one more day. I really liked the vibes of the city.

Food
Greek cuisine is a vibrant tapestry of flavors and traditions, reflecting the rich history and diverse landscapes of Greece. Renowned for the use of fresh ingredients, healthy fats like olive oil, and aromatic herbs, Greek food celebrates simplicity and quality. Classic dishes such as moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita highlight the Mediterranean diet's emphasis on vegetables, grains, and lean proteins. With a focus on communal dining and hospitality, Greek meals are often enjoyed with family and friends, making every gathering a delightful culinary experience. The beste thing is to share dishes, so you can taste many different ones. We mostly opted for greek food. Here are our favorite places:
